BRITISH COLUMBIA

  • Capilano College
    Textile Arts

    Students learn about textile arts by
    exploring many different processes
    and by studying historical and
    contemporary works.

    The core content of Weaving and Textile Surface Design is
    complemented by courses in Drawing, Design, Visual Literacy,
    Communications and Textile History. New courses in "Professional and
    Business Skills in Arts and Crafts" and "Precision Dyeing" provide

    Jewellery Art and Design

    Emphasizing both the artistic and technical aspects of jewellery, this unique two-year program provides creative individuals with the training required for excellence in jewellery design and craftsmanship. Most commercial jewellery is very conservative in design, with little to excite a wide variety of tastes. However, when viewed as a sculpture scaled to human proportions, the art of jewellery making takes on limitless possibilities. Through studio drawing, clay modelling and scale projection drawing, students will be able to communicate their ideas to a client or maker. The tradition of European training is combined with a variety of creative techniques within the context of art and costume.

    In the Ceramics area, courses cover the aesthetics and techniques of pottery and ceramic sculpture. Several categories are studied, including pottery, ranging from "palace" pots to utilitarian objects for the home; vessels, which involve the pot as a sculptural form; and the use of clay as a formal sculptural medium.

    Glass

    The Espace Verre facility allows students to study the art of glass in all it's forms, with opportunities to enroll in a 3 year, full time diploma program or in smaller workshops. Classes range from introductory to advanced, and there are even courses directly at teens (from age 10 -15). The school has studio space for emerging artists as well as a gallery and boutique of fine glass work. Courses are bilingual!
